Holiday light strands are not accepted in curbside recycling due to the risk of wires tangling in sorting machinery, which can lead to equipment shutdowns and safety hazards for workers. However, residents have an alternative for disposing of unwanted lights.
Easttown Township is offering a drop-off option at the Easttown Township Municipal Building through January 12. A collection bin is located outside the main entrance. Only string lights should be placed in the bin; spools or reels are not accepted.
“String lights can’t go in recycling bins because their wires get tangled in sorting machinery at facilities, causing shutdowns and creating safety hazards for workers.”
This initiative aims to provide a safe and responsible way for community members to recycle holiday lights without disrupting regular recycling operations.
